TICKETS OF LEAVE-CANCELLED Trove Tuesday 18th Feb 2020

Public Domain

Tickets of leave* were highly prized, but there were conditions... and they could be cancelled for many reasons...

TROVE has many articles about them, when they were awarded and when they were cancelled. Some of these announcements give quite a lot of detail about the convicts, even down to what ship they arrived on, so it's worth looking through them to add to the story... most give the reason for the cancellation of the ticket. Some interesting reasons...

You can also find most of these if you search through Government Gazettes, also available through TROVE.

TROVE TUESDAY 11th Feb. 2020. - IRISH NEWS AND NEWSPAPERS over time

IRISH NEWS AND NEWSPAPERS  over time

http://clipart-library.com/irish-flag.html

Australia has always welcomed Irish immigrants, from it's very founding. Admittedly, many of the earliest immigrants were given free passage, whether or not they wanted it. Some of them came on the First Fleet, or like my fourth great grandmother, Bridget Eslin/Heslin, arrived on one of the early convict ships. For her, it was the "Sugar Cane"in 1793.

Though Bridget arrived as a convict, like many of her ilk, she became a respectable citizen, raising a large family with fellow convict, Robert Hobbs, who arrived with the Third Fleet, on the "Active" in 1791, after a trial at the Old Bailey.

Summary of Bridget's story Robert & Bridget's story

I've often wondered if Bridget ever longed for news from Ireland. No newspapers for her, as she was illiterate, but I think she would have hung on every word shared by her countrymen.

TROVE has copies of very early newspapers which contained Irish news... here are a few examples...including some clippings from the papers of the time.....

There are a few Irish related newspapers available also, one of the best known is the Freeman's Journal... it can be very helpful when looking for details of families or births, deaths, marriages, as well as general news from Ireland.
