Australia has always welcomed Irish immigrants, from it's very founding. Admittedly, many of the earliest immigrants were given free passage, whether or not they wanted it. Some of them came on the First Fleet, or like my fourth great grandmother, Bridget Eslin/Heslin, arrived on one of the early convict ships. For her, it was the "Sugar Cane"in 1793. 

Though Bridget arrived as a convict, like many of her ilk, she became a respectable citizen, raising a large family with fellow convict, Robert Hobbs, who arrived with the Third Fleet, on the "Active" in 1791, after a trial at the Old Bailey.

I've often wondered if Bridget ever longed for news from Ireland. No newspapers for her, as she was illiterate, but I think she would have hung on every word shared by her countrymen.

TROVE has copies of very early newspapers which contained Irish news... here are a few examples...including some clippings from the papers of the time.....
