Becoming an Australian citizen by choice can take some time. The procedure has changed over the years and at certain times, it was easier than it is today. My Greek grandfather was declared and accepted as a citizen within a few months of arriving in Australia in 1904. He was working from the day he arrived, got good references from the authorities in the area he lived (police) and spoke fluent English. You can read some of his story here.
