CERTIFICATES OF NATURALISATION SERIES 12 Trove Tuesday 11 May 2021

Many of us are descended from migrants, from all over the world... you could class the convicts that were given a free passage as among the first, along with the soldiers and crews that accompanied them.

Initially, there wasn't any naturalisation ceremonies, you arrived, you stayed...but as numbers increased and times changed, it became necessary to account for all who migrated, even if just to know how many citizens were in the country and know what facilities were needed. All citizens were deemed to be British subjects once they settled here, no matter where they came from.

Finding citizenship records

You can read about the very first naturalisation ceremony in Australia in 1945... and you can listen to a recording.

Our family came from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Greece, Albania.. and now the Philippines....I think that's all... but always searching to see if there are any I've missed.

On briefly looking through the lists that follow, I found a cousin of my Dad's in one... Maybe you'll recognise some names also. There are many countries represented... have fun searching and please feel free to Comment if you find any of your own. To see when your family were naturalised you might be lucky with Name Search on the National Archives.. This is the link for Basic Search but you will see that there a number of options. Just using Name Search will bring up most records, but for immigration, use Passenger Arrivals... and if no luck, return from time to time and browse through Newly Scanned records as the work of scanning is ongoing.
