FEMALE CONVICTS.... Trove Tuesday 29th Aug 2023

Female convicts formed a large part of the workforce in the new colony, as well as many of them becoming married either to their employer, or if both were considered of showing good behaviour, some married a fellow convict.  They don't seem to feature as often in the summaries of our history as the males do... then again, there were far more males than females.

The following items list  the conditions that female convicts were subjected to and there are articles that explain the conditions of their employment, either in or out of the Female Factory. Some items posted were to advise the community that more females will be available to hire as servants, etc.

Such hard times, yet these people helped to found our country.

NOTE: There are lots of references to female convicts on TROVE, and Tasmania in particular, has great convict records.

NATURALISATION CERTIFICATES Trove Tuesday 22nd August 2023

These are a selection of events over various months, and states published in the Commonwealth of Australia gazette. Each page may have several dates.

You can click on the image to enlarge or click the link to go to the original. These notices include the address that the person mentioned was living at when the certificate was granted.

Where these posts can help is by looking for electoral rolls, newspapers, and maybe even cemeteries to see where your 'lost' people had been living at various times.

TROVE TUESDAY 15th Aug 2023 MILITARY PROMOTIONS & TRANSFERS

These notices list appointments, promotions and transfers within the military forces of the Commonwealth. They are from a number of states and even include some retirements. Perhaps you'll discover something about one of your ancestors.  You could also try one or more of other sites such as

                https://trove.nla.gov.au and NameSearch.aspx

        for possible further information.

Please click on included images to enlarge.

While these notices are from 1905, you can find other years to explore.

One hint you may not have thought of is that forenames have sometimes been switched around for some reason, in that Ronald Paul Smith, may have been known as Paul Ronald Smith... always keep an open mind.

TROVE TUESDAY 8th August 2023 MISSING PERSONS

These are selected randomly and are from between the years 1921-1960. They are all sourced from TROVE.

Two hints that some may not think of...

* don't dismiss these notices because of where they are published ...our ancestors often moved around more than we realise.

*  whenever you're searching for a particular name, and come across the same or very similar surname, it is often worthwhile to save the information in a 'Maybe' file...particularly when looking for those 'missing'. Often just forenames were changed e.g. Browne became Brown, or they abbreviated from names like Woodward to Wood... I'm sure you have found some variations in your own trees.

You know the drill, click to enlarge... happy hunting.
