TROVE TUESDAY 4TH Dec 2018- FEMALE FACTORY DISCORD, Dubious Character, Extraordinary Births & more

TROVE never fails to serve us well.. we search for one item and are intrigued by others...such is the situation whenever I come across the Commercial Journal and Advertiser. I began looking for further articles, with a different aspect, about the ever interesting Female Factory. Tales of the Female Factory and it's often hapless inhabitants seem to fascinate my readers each time I share something.

Female Factory National Library Australia c1826.

The item below about the discord created on the appointment of a new Matron, really stirred the colony, not the least because it was felt that the new Matron would have no knowledge of... well, on reading you will discover all...

Commercial Journal and Advertiser (Sydney, NSW : 1835 - 1840), Wednesday 22 August 1838,    National Library of Australia  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article226460729

It's interesting to see the breakdown of the various categories that the woman were held under...and also the ratio of children to women that were living there in August 1838.

I couldn't resist including the rest of the edition of this paper... the following item portrays a very strange court appearance, quite theatrical it seems.. how did the Judge keep a straight face?

From theatre in the court, we are informed that 'delicate ankles' will no longer be at risk, at least in one area...
followed by some general news, including about real theatre...

After a sad story, it is almost impossible not to smile at the news of these extraordinary births... it seems there is an Editor with a sense of humour.

Back to general news, but always with a twist...

and just in case you need some advice as to how to raise a large family on a budget...tell me, would you try this at home?
