MARRIAGES
1800s-1900s
Some of the most interesting stories, notices, you will find in TROVE are those related to marriages...not just for the excitement of finding an ancestor's notice, but in the lengthy descriptions in some of the notices.
Many weddings made the social pages of the local newspapers .. and it was interesting to see how some intended to to 'outdo' others...You can read the guest list in some, lists of gifts perhaps, detailed descriptions of the clothing worn .. maybe even the honeymoon destinations.
Of course guest lists can be invaluable for adding to the family tree, but treat with caution... especially with more common names.
The following notices are from each state and territory.. enjoy. Please click to enlarge..

Apologies for the varying sizes.
Great blog Chris. I love the crinoline parody particularly and the the warning regarding soldier's marriages is very interesting. It might explain a few things in some families. I have used the very detailed announcements to solve a family relationship mystery myself. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lyn... I loved researching this... found so many wonderful announcements, so expect a follow up in a little while... wasn't that an interesting letter re the soldiers...
ReplyDeleteI loved the Perth announcement when the bride wore "shot hessian in a subdued elephant tint..." if only we had a photo!
Thanks for your comment.
