ABSOLUTE & CONDITIONAL PARDONS
Not all convicts served their full sentence.
As always, Sydney Living Museums gives a great explanation as to how and why...there is just a short extract below.. it's worth going to the site to read the full details... you might be surprised at the names you recognise. You can also see the definitions of all the various pardons, complete or partial.
These clippings list hundreds of names..starting with those given Absolute Pardons, if any occurred within the time period of the notice published, followed by the Conditional Pardons. They show the name of the convict, the ship they arrived on and either the year the ship left Britain or arrived in Australia.
I have also included some extracts from one of my favourite sites, Convict Records If you have further information on any of the convicts listed, please do consider adding to Convict Records. It is freely available to all and much appreciated. Your input can only enhance it. Happy hunting... do let us know if you find one of your convicts.
From Sydney Living Museums ..
While some convicts broke the rules and were punished, most of them worked hard and tried to stay out of trouble.
Good behaviour could earn a convict different types of rewards or privileges. They might have been given extra food or more free time, or been given a job with more responsibility – such as being a constable (a convict assigned to supervise the behaviour of the other convicts) at the Barracks.
